- i want to talk about somethingthat you addressed in this article in"entertainment weekly." and i think this is--this is oneof the many reasons i love you. but there was a reporter whocame up to you-- you have to tell the story. - there was a reporter that, after "tammy," we got a lot of, uh,"challenging" critiques from that movie, which i alsolearned maybe not to read any. but there was one who saida lot of things,
and i met him atthe toronto film festival, and he actually said,"i'm the one that wrote this," and he'd said, basically, i'm only a good actress wheni look attractive, and that my husband shouldn't beallowed to direct me, because he let me be--to look hideous in this movie, and it was a lot of thingsand just, like, kind of a "how dare womennot look beautiful, perfect and attractivein a movie?"
and he came up to me, and i wassurprised that he talked to me, and we were there fora different movie, and i said, "you know, would you do that to a man? "would you--if john c. reilly played a really broken-downcharacter and looked terrible--" i said, "i put a lot of timeand effort into having her completely not looklike she cared about herself." i said, "that was part of howi felt she felt on the inside." and i said, "would you ever saythat to a man?"
and he goes, "well, i mean--but you really looked bad." and then i said, "i hope--do you have children?" he said, "i do."i said, "i hope you don't havea daughter." and i didn't mean thatin a mean way, and i said, "if she came home to you--" and he spoke about his childrenso lovely. he was actuallya really kind man and spoke about his sonand his daughter
with a lot of love and kindness. and when i said, "if she comeshome and someone says, 'you can't have a job becauseyou're unattractive--'" i said, "are you going to say,'that's right.'?" and he--and he took that inhis heart, and he was like, "no, that's--i would never want that to-- i would never in a million yearswant that to happen." and i said, "just know everytime you write stuff, "every young girl inthis country reads that
and they just get a little bitchipped away." and we--i just think we teardown women in this country for all these superficialreasons, and women are so greatand strong. and i think he reallyheard that. that man was--[cheers and applause] [cheers and applause] but i think he heard it.[cheers and applause] i think--[cheers and applause]
and that--that--thank you,[cheers and applause] but the writer was reallyloving, and you could tell he wasa loving father. i think it's a bad habit thatwe've gotten into, and it's not that peopleare malicious. i just think it's--it's so easy to take a swipe, but i'm like,"just, go the other way." - yeah.- build it up. i mean, i feel likethat's what you do
every day with your show. you put a little love andkindness in the world, and it does good thingswhen you do that. - yep, it's so much better tobuild people up. - it is.[cheers and applause]
